The Mimmisbrunnir is a College of Magic created by Royal decree of King Magnus Thorvald I. Its charter is threefold

  • To train and assist practitioners of the Arcane Arts.
  • To study the Arcane and serve as a library and archive for the information and relics gathered throughout Vintermor, and
  • To advise and support the King and Kingdom of Vintermor in all matters relating to the Arcane.

Organization

The Mimisbrunnir is governed by the Council of the Five, a group of five wizards and sorcerors appointed by the king with the advice of the existing members of the Council. The head of the council, called the Grand Magus, is traditionally granted an unlanded title equivilant to a Knight, and is answerable only to the King, thus removing the temptation for other nobles to meddle in Arcane matters they might not understand fully. The members of the Council are known individually by the title Counciller-Magus.

Below the Council, but answerable only to them, are the Elders. These magi advise in the day to day operations of the College, some choosing to teach, some to research, some both, and a few are still active adventurers. They are free to research whatever they wish, are granted all of the access that Fellows are given, and have certain facilities provided to them at the College's expense because of their value to the college. (See below). To become an Elder, one must be able to cast arcane spells of at least the seventh rank, have a good reputation within the magical community, and be perceived as someone who the College could rely upon to further the College and King's goals.

The next rank within the College is that of Fellow. The fellows are, in essence, the rank and file tenured professors and staff of the college. They're the people who normally handle the research and enchantments, teaching of classes, scribing of scrolls, making of potions, etcetera that form the bulk of the Mimisbrunnir's day to day work. Fellows are given access to most of the College's libraries and research materials, can employ sages and qualified assistants for lower than normal rates (fifty percent of normal), and can rent both magical and alchemical labs for a small fee. In addition, they are given access to spellbooks containing every known spell (save those held out by their creators) for transcription at their leisure. To become a Fellow, one must be able to cast arcane spells of at least the fourth rank, have a good reputation within the magical community, and have skills that the College considers useful. Each Fellow is asked to contribute three days' time per month casting spells for the college's enchanters.

The last rank within the College is that of Associate. This rank is open to all, and can be purchased at the cost of 120 gold per year (10 gold per month.) This rank grants access to the College's teaching libraries, and gives the associates the abilit to rent research and laboratory space.

In addition to this organization, many of the the Arcane Prestige Classes have a presence at the Mimisbrunnir. The people running these classes are also members in good standing of the Mimmisbrunnir and subject to it's rules and governence, though of course they could choose to set up shop elsewhere at any time.
